The Pattern: Short Rest, Heightened Appetite
Across all four individuals, days that followed a night of notably shorter sleep — loosely defined as five hours or fewer based on self-report — were associated with markedly different appetite patterns the following day. The specific observations varied by individual, but shared certain characteristics: a stronger pull toward food within the first two hours of waking; a preference for denser, sweeter, or more energy-dense options at the first meal; a compressed window between the first meal and the first experience of hunger again.

This introduced a sequence that repeated across the twelve-week period for three of the four subjects: high-stress afternoon → late evening meal or snacking → delayed sleep → shorter rest duration → heightened appetite the following morning.

What Rest Quality Added to the Picture
Quantity of sleep was not the only variable the notes captured. Two subjects reported nights of adequate duration that nonetheless felt unrestorative — fragmented, shallow, or interrupted by work-related anxiety. This complicates any simple equation between hours in bed and appetite behaviour the following day. Second: the subjects who had established morning routines — a fixed sequence of activities that began the day regardless of sleep quality — were less likely to experience the heightened appetite pull as an unmanageable disruption. The routine provided structure that the appetite, even on poorly-rested days, appeared to work within rather than overwhelm.
Third: none of the four subjects were able to maintain the observed appetite patterns through willpower alone on short-rest days. What appeared to moderate the impact was not determination but habit structure — the prior establishment of eating patterns that were already in place and required less active decision-making.
